Medical Schools in West Virginia

If you live in the state of West Virginia and you want to apply for a medical in your state, then you should know there are three major medical schools in West Virginia and they are the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, and West Virginia University School of Medicine.. Whether you’re applying in-state or out-of-state, be sure to check out the school’s admission and academic requirements before you start applying.

Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine

Academic Requirements

  • Minimum MCAT score of 9 or above in each section is recommended to apply.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5 or above is recommended to apply.

Perquisites

  • General Biology with Lab: 8 semester hours
  • Inorganic Chemistry with Lab: 8 semester hours
  • Organic Chemistry with Lab: 8 semester hours
  • Physics with Lab: 8 semester hours
  • English: 6 semester hours
  • Social or Behavioral Sciences: 6 semester hours

Admission Information

Preference is given to West Virginia residents. Approximately twenty positions will be available to nonresidents.

  • The primary application service is AMCAS.
  • Application fee of $75 for West Virginia residents and $100 for nonresidents.
  • Primary application deadline is November 1st of the year prior enrollment.
  • Requires three letters of recommendation, two of which must be from academic faculties.
  • Supplemental application materials are due no later then December 31st.
  • Once accepted, you are require to enroll in the school’s Sponsored Health Insurance Plan.
  • Once accepted, you require a criminal background check.
  • You are required to take American Heart Association’s BSL for Healthcare Providers course prior to matriculation.
  • You are required to take a physical examination and immunized.

Admission Statistics

The Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine believes in small class sizes. In 2010, the number of students that enrolled was a total of 75 students. The Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine’s acceptance rate is probably very low under 5% based on the estimate that about 1,500 students apply and 75 students are enrolled. Since only 20 nonresident students are accepted each year, that is about 1.3% chance of acceptance for non residents and about 3.7% for West Virginia residents.

West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine

Academic Requirements

Admission Information

  • The primary application service is AACOMAS (American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine).
  • AACOMAS begins processing applications May 1st.
  • Application material deadline is February 15th.
  • Transcript deadline is February 28th.
  • If invited for an interview, a supplemental application is required with a fee of $40 for in-state applicants and $80 for out-of-state.
  • Requires two evaluation letters, one from an osteopathic physican and one from a premed committee or a science faculty who taught you in class. All letters must be sent to the Admissions Office.

Admission Statistics (from 2008)

A total of 2,879 (164 in-state, 2,715 out-of-state) students applied to West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and only 520 (78 in-state, 442 out-of-state) were accepted. West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine’s acceptance rate is about 18.1%. The acceptance rate for in-state applicants are about 47.6% and about 16.3% for out-of-state.

West Virginia University School of Medicine

Academic Requirements

This applies to those who want to participate in the early decision program.

  • Minimum requirement MCAT score of 8 or above in each section is required to apply for residents.
  • Minimum Science GPA of 3.5 or above is required to apply for residents.
  • Minimum requirement MCAT score of 9 or above in each section is required to apply for nonresidents.
  • Minimum Science GPA of 3.6 or above is required to apply for nonresidents.

Perquisites

  • Biology or Zoology with Labs: 8 semester hours
  • General Chemistry with Labs: 8 semester hours
  • Organic Chemistry with Labs: 8 semester hours
  • Physics with Labs: 8 semester hours
  • English: 6 semester hours
  • Social of Behavior Science: 6 semester hours

Highly recommended: Biochemistry and Cell and Molecular Biology.

  • The primary application service is AMCAS.
  • *The early decision program application is due August 1st.
  • *Candidates will be interviewed at the end of September.
  • *Notification of Committee of Admissions decision by October 1st.
