Medical Schools in Puerto Rico

If you’re looking to go to a medical school outside of North America, Puerto Rico is definitely a country to look into as it differs from the stateside campuses as it has tropical climates year round. There are four medical schools in Puerto Rico. They are the Ponce School of Medicine, San Juan Bautista School of Medicine, Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine, and University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. So before you plan on applying to any of these, be sure to check out their key statistics and requirements to get into these medical schools.

Ponce School of Medicine

Academic Requirements

  • Requires 12 credits of college level Spanish. Must be fluent in both English and Spanish (written and spoken).
  • Minimum requirement MCAT score of 19 or above is required to apply.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.7 or above is required to apply.

Perquisites

  • General Biology I & II with Labs: 8 credits
  • General Chemistry I & II with Labs: 8 credits
  • Organic Chemistry I & II with Labs: 8 credits
  • Physics I & II with Labs: 8 credits
  • Mathematics: 6 credits
  • Behavioral and Social Sciences*: 6 credits
  • Spanish: 12 credits
  • English: 12 credits

*(Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Political Sciences, and Economics).
Recommended courses: Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Liberal Arts, Humanities.

Admission Information

  • The primary application service is AMCAS.
  • Application deadline is December 15th of the year prior to enrollment.
  • Application is required with a fee of $100.
  • No secondary application.
  • Requires police record/background check.
  • Requires official transcripts from all universities attended and three letters of recommendation.
  • Upon acceptance, a written confirmation and a deposit of $100 is required to secure your seat in the entering class, refundable up to April 15th. Also a physical exam is required with evidence of an up to date immunization certificate, including Hepatitis B. You will also be required to a health certificate from the Department of Health of PR.
  • Registration, orientation period and commencement of classes take place in the second half of July.

San Juan Bautista School of Medicine

Academic Requirements

  • Requires 12 credits of college level Spanish. Must be fluent in both English and Spanish (written and spoken).
  • Minimum requirement MCAT score of 19 or above is required to apply.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 or above is required to apply.

Perquisites

  • Organic Chemistry: 8 credits
  • Inorganic Chemistry: 8 credits
  • General Physics: 8 credits
  • Biology: 8 credits
  • Behavior and Social Sciences*: 6 credits
  • Spanish: 12 credits
  • English: 12 credits
  • Electives**: 28 credits

*(Sociology, Psychology, Political Sciences, Economics, and Anthropology).
**The Puerto Rico Medical Examiners Board recommends that the courses be taken in natural sciences.

Admission Information

  • The primary application service is AMCAS.
  • Application deadline is December 15th of the year prior to enrollment.
  • Application is required with a fee of $100.

  • Requires official transcripts from all universities attended and two letters of recommendation from your science professors directly sent to San Juan Bautista School of Medicine. In addition, you will need one letter of recommendation from a community leader specifying any community/volunteer work.
  • Upon acceptance, the applicant must submit the following documents:
  • Health Certificate (accompanied by the RPR and PPD or Chest X-Ray results)
  • Hepatitis B vaccine
  • Chicken-pox vaccine or release of responsibility
  • Physician’s report
  • One 2”x2” photo of yourself
  • Original birth certificate
  • Within ten calendar days following the notification of admittance, you must pay the amount of $1,000 in order to reserve your seat. It will be credited towards your tuition.

University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine

Academic Requirements

  • Must be fluent in Spanish (written and spoken)
  • You must have taken the MCAT.
  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 or above is required to apply.
  • Minimum science GPA of 2.5 or above is required to apply.
  • Science and mathematics courses must have grades of B or above.

Perquisites

  • General Chemistry: 8 semester hours
  • Organic Chemistry: 8 semester hours
  • Physics*: 8 semester hours
  • Biology*: 8 semester hours
  • Behavioral and Social Sciences**: 12 semester hours
  • Spanish: 12 semester hours
  • English: 12 semester hours

*In addition to the basic introductory courses.
**(Sociology, Psychology, Political Sciences, Economics, or Anthropology).

Admission Information

  • The primary application service is AMCAS.
  • Early applications due June 1st the year before admission.
  • Latest applications due December 1st the year before admission.
  • An application fee of $20 apply to residents.
  • No secondary application.
  • Notification of acceptance by school no later than April of the year of admission.
  • You have fifteen days to respond to acceptance offer.
  • Requires two official transcripts from all universities attended to be sent directly to Office of Admissions no later than December 1st prior the year to admission. and two letters of recommendation from your science professors directly sent to San Juan Bautista School of Medicine. In addition, you will need one letter of recommendation from a community leader specifying any community/volunteer work.
  • Requires three recommendations from current professors.
  • To guarantee enrollment upon acceptance, there is a $100 mandatory deposit within fifteen days of acceptance along with a written acknowledgement.

Admission Statistics

Priority of acceptance into the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine is given to applicants who are legal residents of Puerto Rico.
To be highly qualified as a non-resident, you must have strong relational ties with Puerto Rico through birthplace, high school attended, college attended, and parent’s legal residence.
For foreign national applicants with legal residence in Puerto Rico, you will only be considered if you’re either a U.S. citizen or have been granted a permanent resident visa in the United States.
